A Scared Pup in a Parking Lot
In a Grand Rapids, Michigan, Meijer parking lot, a small black-and-white dog was seen darting nervously between cars and shopping carts. The dog, clearly frightened and alone, caught the attention of a group of kind-hearted shoppers. They worked together to gently earn her trust, and after some time, they were able to safely secure her. It was then that they discovered the heartbreaking reason behind her distress.

A Note That Told Her Story
Tied around the dog’s collar was a small baggie containing a note. The message was simple yet poignant: “My name is Rukey. Please help me, take me home.” Realizing that Rukey had been abandoned, the compassionate rescuers brought her to the Kent County Animal Shelter. Angela Hollinshead, the shelter’s director, shared that while they often see abandoned pets, this was the first time they had encountered one with a note. “This is a first for us,” Hollinshead told The Dodo. “We don’t usually see dogs turned loose in a public space with a note like this.”
Rukey’s Journey to Safety
The shelter believes Rukey is a young Schipperke mix. Though she’s initially shy and takes time to warm up to new people, the staff quickly recognized her loving and loyal nature. “She’s a very petite, little dog, and she’s very sweet,” Hollinshead said. “Once she trusts you, she’s incredibly affectionate.”
A Message of Compassion
The shelter shared Rukey’s story on Facebook, addressing her former owner with empathy and understanding. They acknowledged the difficult decision that had been made, writing, “To the person who had to make the heartbreaking decision to let her go — please know that Rukey is safe and deeply loved by our staff. Her gentle personality has already won our hearts, and we will ensure she is cared for and finds a wonderful, loving family. We can only imagine how difficult this choice was for you, and we sincerely hope you find brighter days ahead.”

After arriving at the shelter, Rukey received a clean bill of health and was spayed, making her ready for adoption. It didn’t take long for her to find her forever home. Though her time at the shelter was brief, Rukey left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
